Introduction

Hunger can make it hard for children to learn. When students come to school without eating, they may feel tired, weak and unable to concentrate in class. Some children may even miss school because they do not have enough food at home. In poor families, children may also leave school to help their parents or find work. Providing meals at school can help solve some of these problems and encourage children to stay in school.

How school meals Encourage Attendance

Food as a motivation: For many families who struggle to get food, a guaranteed meal at school is a big motivation. Parents are more willing to send their children to school when they know their children will get at least one meal a day. Children also push their parents to let them go to school because they know there will be food.

Less absenteeism: Hungry children often miss school because they have to look for food or work to earn food. Some become sick due to lack of enough food. When the school gives enough food, children do not need to miss school to look for food elsewhere hence they come regularly.

Benefits Beyond Food.

School meals do more than just stop hunger, below are the benefits:

1. Better learning: A child who has eaten can concentrate, remember what is taught and participate in class. When a child performs well, they enjoy school and have the motivation to go to school. Hunger makes children sleepy and inactive and food gives them energy to learn.

2. Improved school performance: Schools that offer meals often see better results in exams. Good results attract more children to enroll and encourage those already in school to stay and complete their studies.

3.  Better health: Regular school meals improve the health and nutrition of children. Healthy children do not get sick often, hence do not miss many school days and this is very important for young girls and children from vulnerable families.

4. Safety and protection: When children are in school eating, they are safe. They are not on streets, in farms, or working in markets during school hours. School becomes a safe place where they are cared for.

5. Equality for girls: In some families, girls are more likely to miss school than boys. When school provides food, families see more value in sending them to school.

How Schools and Communities Can strengthen feeding program

School feeding programs can only reduce dropout rates if they are strong and continuous:

1.Community contribution; Parents can contribute in small ways. They can give firewood, water, maize, beans or vegetables from their farms. They can also volunteer to cook and serve the food and when the community owns the program, it lasts longer.

2.School gardens; Schools can start small gardens where learners grow vegetables like kales, tomatoes and onions. This reduces the cost of food and teaches children farming skills. The garden produce can supplement the feeding program.

3.Partnerships; schools can partner with local organizations, well-wishers, churches and county governments to get support. They can ask for food donations, cooking pots and storage.

4.Proper management; Schools need to manage food well. They should keep good records, store food safely and ensure the food is clean and well-cooked. Transparency builds trust with parents and donors.

5. Government support; The government should include school feeding in education budget and policies. A policy that supports school meals will ensure all children especially in dry areas get food in school.

Conclusion.

School meals can help reduce the number of children who drop out of school. They reduce hunger, improve attendance and help children concentrate on their studies .When schools, parents and communities work together, children have a better chance of staying in school, learning well and achieving their goals.
